My name is Mary, and I am currently a teacher in a K-5 classroom for children with disabilities. So, what qualifies me to write a blog about inclusive preschool?
a) Many of the fun activities that I do with my K-5 students can be used and/or adapted to meet the needs of preschool-aged students.
b) I hold a Master's Degree in early childhood special education (PreK-1)
c) I taught preschool exceptional education for 7 1/2 years (this is only my 2nd year in elementary education).
d) The education of young children is my passion and I have dedicated the last 9 years of my life researching, creating, and teaching.
The goal of this blog is to give preschool educators the tools to create and implement curriculum to meet the needs of all students, both with and without disabilities. Eventually I hope to set up a site that will allow (probably for a small subscription fee) teachers to access printable materials that I will create and post. I know how time-consuming it is to create these things, and when I was a new teacher I would have given anything to have someone give me ideas and make it easier for me to access materials when I was spending so much of my time working on data and IEPs. There are not a lot of resources specifically for teaching students with special needs, and that's the niche I hope to fill.
My blog will contain seasonal activities, about 2 weeks ahead of schedule (e.g. I will start posting activities for Halloween, pumpkins, leaves, etc. this week). Activities will be posted on a daily basis as well as weekly activities (stories, songs, center modifications) that can be used through the duration of a thematic unit. I hope that this will make life a little easier for my fellow teachers. Let me know your ideas and requests!
